This year, one of Eugene’s most recognizable destinations reaches a major milestone as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.
The milestone comes as the Market prepares to host the annual Market Fest on July 18 and 19. The free, family-friendly festival has become a summertime tradition, filling the Market with live music, local vendors, entertainment, food and activities for all ages. While Market Fest returns every summer, this year’s event offers an extra reason to celebrate as it helps commemorate five decades of community at 5th Street Public Market.
Originally established in 1976 by developer Norm Fogelstrom, 5th Street Public Market transformed a collection of historic industrial buildings into a vibrant destination centered around local businesses and community gathering. Over the years, it has continued to grow while preserving its unique character, becoming home to independent retailers, restaurants, tasting rooms, artisan shops and the Inn at the 5th. Today, the Market remains one of Eugene’s premier destinations, welcoming locals and visitors alike while staying true to its mission of supporting local entrepreneurs and fostering community.
Market Fest is one of the signature events in the Market’s annual Summer Series, a season-long lineup of themed weekends running from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The series features free concerts, family movies, community gatherings and special events designed to showcase local artists, makers and nonprofits. This year’s Market Fest serves as the highlight of the series, pairing the festival’s annual tradition with the Market’s golden anniversary.
Throughout the weekend, visitors can enjoy live entertainment, shopping and family fun spread throughout the Market. Local musicians will perform across multiple stages while aerialists, acrobats and circus performers bring this year’s whimsical, vaudeville-inspired theme to life. The festival also features artisan vendors, interactive art, children’s activities, games and plenty of opportunities to explore everything the Market has to offer.
Families can enjoy face painting, hands-on crafts and community art projects, while adults browse local makers, relax in the beer garden or grab a bite from one of the Market’s many restaurants. Relief Nursery will be the featured community nonprofit, highlighting the festival’s longstanding commitment to giving back while celebrating the people and organizations that make Eugene unique.
In honor of the Market’s 50th anniversary, visitors can also experience special exhibits celebrating its history and evolution. A History Art Show showcases photography, paintings and architectural renderings reflecting the Market’s transformation over the past five decades, while collaborative art projects invite guests to become part of the celebration.
While much has changed since the Market first opened in 1976, its original vision remains the same: creating a welcoming place where local businesses, artists and entrepreneurs can thrive.
