Jackie and I got a tour of Heritage Distilling Company’s production facility in Eugene, along with their soon-to-be remodeled tasting room at Thinking Tree Spirits, followed by a tasting at the tasting room in the Fifth Street Market Alley. Founded in 2011 by Justin and Jennifer Stiefel and U.S. Army Veterans Drew and Sara Kellerman, Heritage Distilling Company has grown from a small local distillery to the largest in Oregon, with a presence in multiple states across the US.
A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation
HDC’s Eugene facility, which opened in 2016, boasts custom-made Italian stills, a nod to the company’s commitment to quality and tradition. But it’s not just about the equipment; it’s about the people behind the spirits. Head distiller Dain Grimmer crafts a wide array of products, from bourbon and whiskey to vodka and gin, each with its own unique story.
The company’s product lines include the Salute Series, which gives back to military and first responder organizations, the Elk Rider Series, and flavored vodkas. One standout product is the Cocoa Bomb Whiskey, a chocolate whiskey infusion that has become a fan favorite for its versatility in cocktails and as a standalone sipper.
Community-Centric Approach
What sets HDC apart is its commitment to “empowering communities and sharing the heritage of our communities through spirits, innovative programs, and intoxicating tasting experiences,” as explained by Bella Kleiner, a marketing team member. This philosophy is evident in their unique Cask Club program.
Walter Wakeman, the Cask Club program manager, describes it as “the coolest thing about this company.” Members get their own barrel for a year, which they can fill with any HDC spirit and flavor to their liking. They can taste it throughout the aging process and bottle it when they’re satisfied. Some members even enter their creations into competitions, with many winning awards from the American Distilling Institute.
Giving Back to the Community
HDC’s commitment to community extends beyond its tasting rooms. The company works with around 25 nonprofits, many of which are military-based or veteran-focused. A portion of the proceeds from their Special Operations Salute line goes directly to these organizations.
The company also collaborates with veterans in unique ways. For instance, the label art for their War Dog whiskey features the likeness of Duco, a military service dog who saved multiple lives during his service. This collaboration with Duco’s handler, Rick Hogg, exemplifies HDC’s dedication to honoring service members in creative and meaningful ways.
A Bright Future Ahead
HDC is in the process of merging with Thinking Tree Spirits, another leading craft distillery in Eugene. This merger, set to be completed by early 2025, will bring both brands under one roof at 88 Jackson Street, combining their tasting rooms while maintaining separate brand identities.
From their coconut vodka that transports you to a tropical beach to their high-proof Stiefel’s Select Rye that packs a flavorful punch, HDC offers something for every palate. But more than that, they offer a chance to be part of something bigger – a community of spirit enthusiasts who appreciate quality, creativity, and giving back.
