For four days each August, Junction City gets a distinctly Nordic makeover as the streets fill with colorful costumes, traditional dancing, music, food, crafts and plenty of Scandinavian spirit. The Junction City Scandinavian Festival returns August 13–16, 2026, marking its 65th year of celebrating the Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish heritage woven into the community. The festival is free to attend and offers free entertainment throughout the four-day celebration.
Founded in 1961, the festival has grown into one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest Scandinavian cultural celebrations, drawing more than 90,000 visitors each year. The experience feels a little like stepping into an old-world Nordic village, with traditional foods such as aebleskiver and lefse, handmade crafts, rosemaling, wood carving, embroidery and other demonstrations filling the festival grounds.
Music and dance are a huge part of the celebration, with folk dancers, fiddlers and other performers taking the stage throughout the weekend. The festival’s children’s dance program is another longtime tradition, with around 200 young dancers participating each year and performing throughout the festival. Kids can also hunt for hidden tomtes, meet trolls and Vikings, try crafts, enjoy storytelling and take part in other family-friendly activities.
Each of the four festival days celebrates one of the Nordic countries, and the weekend culminates in evening pageants followed by community dances where everyone is invited to join in, no experience or costume required. It’s a tradition that manages to be both a celebration of Junction City’s history and a genuinely fun summer weekend for the whole community.
The festival is organized entirely by volunteers through the Scandinavian Cultural Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to keeping the region’s Scandinavian heritage alive through cultural experiences and education. Beyond the festival, the foundation supports year-round dance groups, youth programs, workshops and other community events.
