As winter’s chill settles in, downtown Eugene is preparing to sparkle. On Friday, December 5, 2025, from 4:30–8:00 p.m., the annual Downtown Eugene Holiday Night Out invites residents and visitors to trade cozy couch nights for a festive stroll through twinkling lights, seasonal sounds, shopping, and community spirit.
This beloved event, presented by the Downtown Eugene Merchants and a coalition of local partners, is a chance for everyone to explore downtown after hours — and celebrate the start of the holiday season in style.
What’s Happening — A Night to Remember
The crown jewel of the evening is the lighting of the holiday tree in Kesey Square, scheduled for 6:30 p.m.. Provided by Sierra Pacific Industries, the tree will shine as a centerpiece for the season, with lights graciously donated by local partners and a tree stand crafted by students from Lane Community College — a lovely testament to community collaboration.
Meanwhile, the adjacent Farmers Market Pavilion will host continued celebrations throughout the evening. At 7:00 p.m., attendees can enjoy a performance by the Churchill High School Choir — a beautiful soundtrack to a night of holiday cheer. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be on hand, making it a perfect outing for families. For the kids (or the young at heart), there’s even a chance to write letters to Santa with a little help from local wordsmiths.
To add to the magic, this year’s Holiday Night Out coincides with the First Friday ArtWalk presented by Lane Arts Council — blending festive lights with Eugene’s vibrant arts scene. Galleries, studios, and cultural venues around town will open their doors in celebration, giving art lovers and holiday shoppers alike plenty to explore.
Shop, Eat, Sip, and Stroll Through the Holidays
Strolling downtown, you’ll find participating shops open late — offering holiday specials, cheerful decor, and a serious dose of seasonal spirit. Whether you’re browsing handmade gifts, grabbing a warm drink, or hunting down that perfect holiday find, the downtown corridor promises something for everyone.
For those craving something more than window-shopping, the evening offers food carts set up around Kesey Square with heated tents courtesy of the city’s cultural services team. You can also slide into one of Eugene’s beloved restaurants or bars for dinner, a drink, or a cozy bite — many of which will be rolling out specials for the night.
It’s a night designed for wandering, discovery, and delight. With so many businesses, artists, and venues participating, you’re likely to stumble upon something new — maybe a limited-edition gift, a local art piece, or just the perfect hot cocoa on a crisp winter’s night.
New This Year: Holiday Window Competition
One of the most exciting additions this year is the inaugural Holiday Window Display Competition. Storefronts across downtown have transformed their windows into seasonal showcases, vying for recognition from guest judges — and the votes of the community in the “Community Choice” category.
The window displays will remain lit all season long, inviting parents, friends, and holiday strollers to return again and again, discovering new surprises with each visit. It’s a fun, festive way for local businesses to express creativity — and for visitors to feel immersed in holiday magic.
Why It Matters — More Than Just Lights and Shopping
Holiday Night Out isn’t just about commerce. It’s a celebration of community — a reminder of how much can be accomplished when neighbors, businesses, institutions, and artists come together. The tree in Kesey Square stands as a symbol of that collaboration, crafted and installed by local organizations and students.
It’s also a chance to support local — from restaurants and retailers to galleries and food carts. Downtown Eugene becomes a hub of connection, creativity, and warmth at a time when many of us are looking for meaning, togetherness, and tradition.
Art, music, civic pride, holiday joy — it all converges in one vibrant, welcoming night. And for newcomers or longtime residents, Holiday Night Out offers something familiar and something new: smiles by the Christmas tree, hot drinks in hand, and the buzz of downtown alive with possibility.
